Project Summary: The goal of this project was to develop a web-based tutorial that teaches visitors how to use the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL). This project was showcased at the 2004 Faculty Development Grant Showcase by Principal Investigators, Beth Layton and Pam Sherwill-Navarro.

Technology and Software: Tutorials for this project were developed using Macromedia Flash MX and RoboDemo/Captivate. The example movies were developed using Macromedia Flash MX and narrated by students at the Theatre department in the University of Florida. The simulations were developed using RoboDemo/Captivate. The website was developed in Adobe Dreamweaver. Transcripts and tip sheets were developed in Microsoft Word and converted to Adobe PDF format. Graphics were developed using Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Fireworks. Audio for the examples were recorded on site at the CITT using SoundForge.

Pedagogy and Technology: The tutorial has a parallel structure, modeling specific behavior through narrated case studies and subsequently inviting students to apply the behavior in closed simulations. RoboDemo/Captivate allows the developer to create a guided tour of the interface and request that users enter text in a simulated environment. By capturing the information as it will appear to the user, the tutorials take learners through real-life, real-time scenarios. Diversity in the case studies makes content relevant to a broad audience. Providing pre-concepts and tip sheets reinforces the material and provides support for the user long after the tutorials are complete.
