Project summary: The Virtual Field Day site was developed for University of Florida IFAS Extension to provide growers with the opportunity to access the information usually provided at field day events held at county extension offices. Extension clients now have a convenient way to virtually attend the events through video and VR and participants can review and obtain the printed materials provided by experts. The site also features videos that cover different areas of research and that address frequently asked questions.
Technology and Software: The site is aimed at users all across Florida who have a wide range of access to technology. The web pages were developed using Adobe Dreamweaver and uses templates to manage the large number of pages per location. The videos were shot by IFAS Communication Services and were edited using Final Cut Pro. For the presentations in the classrooms, Sonic Foundry Mediasite allowed syncing the PowerPoint slides with video of the speakers. The 360-degree QuickTime VR movies required PhotoWarp, VRWorx. Adobe Flash was used to create the interactive location maps.
Pedagogy and Technology: The information in the Virtual Field Day site is organized in two ways: according to the location of the field day event and according to topics covered at the host extension office. This is so that both field day participants and web users interested in the subject can easily find what they need. There are videos that document the field day presentations along with scripted videos of experts sharing general information on their subject of expertise in order to cater to both audiences
