What is it? 
Facebook and Myspace are social networking websites in which users create a network of friends via a template-based website. The website can include personal profiles, blogs, and multiple forms of media such as text, audio, video, and images. Users can join groups, comment on other friends sites, participate in text chat sessions, listen to music, post bulletins, search for friends, and can customize their profile by using HTML code.

What are the educational uses and benefits?
- Allows for the creation of groups for current students and alumni. Groups can be created for a class, an activity, an interest, and so on.
- Allows for the easy distribution of information and media.
- Allows for easy posting of event schedules.
- Promotes school activities.
- Promotes communication among students and instructors and provides an alternative method of communication between students and instructors.
- Promotes collaboration among peers.
- Provides a sense of “belonging” among students.
- Can be used as a recruiting tool among departments, universities, and potential employers.

How do I get started?
- Users register for an account on myspace or facebook.
- After creating an account the user can modify and personalize their page.
- Users can request to add a person as a friend in order to create networks of “friends.”
- Users can create “groups” and invite users to join groups. For example, an instructor can create a group for a class and invite his or her students to join the group therefore creating a special forum for the students in that class. The forum can be closed to the public as well.
